    I also have a Givenergy battery and Octopus Intelligent Go rate. I do fill up the battery at 7.5p and discharge to grid at 15p. Yes you are benefitting the grid ad well as yourself. You are helping to balance the grid by contributing to refuce the use of gas during the day and then consuming excess renewable electricity st night. There are heavy penalties levied when curtailment of renewable energy generation is nevessary, which is more likely to ocurr at night. In my area we also have frequent Octopus Powerup sessions when all electricity is free, and thst is also to help reduce curtailment penslties, mostly during high wind conditions.

    Here in the Southwest, our 3.76kWp system produced 596 kWhr for June, which I don't think is unreasonable considering it's over 10 years old now.

    Hi Dale here in mid wales not to far from you 1447 kw for June about 50 kw less than 2023 👍👍👍 well just checked and about 75 miles didn’t think it was that far

  • @drrock999
    @drrock999 13 годин тому

    I charge overnight and sell back more in the day, simply because grid is much lower in CO2 overnight. So there’s net benefit if I buy at 50g/kwh and sell and 100g/kwh. Don’t discharge batteries to sell back yet however.

    • @SpectrumGeeks

      Cheers for sharing. I think it makes alot of sense to utilise the off peak for charging, etc (I charge the cars and heat hot water off peak), and then export the "excess", as that seems a natural set of events, vs playing the system abit with off peak charge and peak discharge. However, like another commenter, it must be in the grids benefit or it wouldn't be a thing.

  • @fire_stick

    Surely your helping the grid or they wouldn’t give you the charge/discharge rates. Make hay I say, battery’s should be good for it and warranted for the cycles too.

      Thanks for sharing your opinion. At the time the video was recorded it was less prevalent for the communication of the legalities of these scooters on the road, and I had passed many police officers whilst on the scooter without issue. However, since then the communication on where they can be used has been better communicated and enforcement of the law has strengthen, and in reviews since I had made this clear.

    Hi Dale Once again an awesome video! I’ve passed all nine theoretical exams now. I wanted to know how much exam revision & prep time you put in for the FRTOL exam? Thanks once again

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 6 днів тому

      In terms of exam prep and revision, its pretty much as covered in the video. I did the Irv Lee Zoom course and that was probably an hour, then I spent the rest of the time reading CAP413 and then just trying to research what the exam would be like. I think by the end of your training (as I did mine at the end) you should be pretty confident with the RT, so just need to make sure you dont use any RT "slang" like pilots really use, vs what CAP413 states.

    Thanks for the update. We're just about to have 3.8kWp of solar installed. Once I get me smart meter installed (I'm currently on an old wheel meter), I'll be trying to export as much as possible. Eon are currently paying 16.5 Pence per unit on export, but charging 6.9 Pence per unit for 7 hours cheap rate. So it's better to send the excess energy to the grid at 16.5p per unit, and heat the hot water at night for 6.9p per unit. Until the new meter goes in, I'm expecting to see a huge reduction in units recorded by my old meter, as it'll be counting backwards when the panels are producing. Charging the car will mean I'll not submit a negative meter reading, even through the rest of this summer.

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 6 днів тому

      I have the debate with export vs consume with myself often. I am happy to export, but I am also somewhat conscious of the number of cycles a battery can do (regardless of warranty). Those rates from EON are great though.

    Hi, im in the process of having panels and a 10kw battery installed. Im leaning towards the Jinko Tiger Neo N type panels, is that what youve got and are they a good panel? Also do you think 7kw invertor is too big for a 7kw panel array? I cant seem to get a straight forward answer :)

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 7 днів тому

      The Jinko Tiger Neo N Type panels are what I have and they seem to perform really well so far, and when I researched them had good performance stats and longevity. Regarding the 7kW inverter and the same sized array, it can depend a little bit on the brand of inverter you are using, if there are any optimisers, any micro inverters, etc. It also depends on the direction of your roof and how often you can fully maximise the solar generation fully. Hopefully your installer could do you a generation estimate with the same array and a 5 and 7 kW inverter and then you can see the difference and worth the cost.

  • @Mummameeks
    @Mummameeks 7 днів тому

    Had my smart meter fitted two weeks ago. Last week it said I used £21 for the week. I pay between £350 and £500 a month and I have 16 solar panels. If the IHD is correct I have been being overcharged for years.

    • @SpectrumGeeks

    Great video Dale. I have the same set up with with one 9.5kw battery but considering a second. Are you able to confirm how long it would take to charge the battery from empty to full based on your experience?

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 7 днів тому

      At the moment I cant really say, as due to the charging issue I am having I have struggled to get them to 100% consistently. In theory I should be able to fully charge both from 0 to 100 in about 5.5 hours, but as mentioned in my first solar update video, the charge rate is capping out at 580w. I have GivEnergy here tomorrow to replace the primary battery which they believe may be the issue.

  • @colingoode3702
    @colingoode3702 8 днів тому

    I have a similar system except it's a 3.6kW Hybrid inverter & same 9.5kWh batteries x 2. 10 x 420w panels ESE & 5 x 430w panels NW. Zappi & an Eddi too. Don't use the Eddi much now because of my new tariff. After switching to Octopus Intel Go I totally changed my strategy of trying to use as much generation as possible. Now, I charge the batteries every night irrespective of the next day weather. I also charge the EV & run any appliances overnight at 7.5p/kWh. Come sun up the batteries are pretty full so, after a short top up from solar, I'm exporting any & all of my solar, excluding any house load, for for the rest of the day @15p/kWh. For me May was the 1st negative bill month of the year & June will be the same through to probably late October. After that we will rely on the batteries for daytime power. I still have a gas boiler which is only 5 years old so not worth me replacing yet with Air to Air or A2W heat pumps. I have an A2A system in our conservatory for cooling & heating. Mostly used for winter heating. I have also had a few issues with my GE batteries. BMS over temperature warnings & State of Charge reading errors. GE did a remote slow calibration which seems to have settled it down but I still get the odd BMS over temp error come up now & then. The GE Community Forum is a good place to get information & ask questions but I guess you already know this. My only regret - not getting a larger capacity inverter. My 3.6kW Hybrid can easily be swamped if too many appliances are running at the same time forcing extra power to be used from the grid during the daytime. I'm still trying to educate my wife that having the washing machine, dishwasher, iron & kettle on all at the same time is not good. Hope you get your batteries sorted.

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 7 днів тому

      Thanks for sharing your setup and usage also. GivEnergy already did a remote slow calibration, which helped for a couple of days, but then back to the issue, so I am hoping it gets sorted with the next visit. I agree regarding the 3.6 kW limit of the inverter, but as I have the Tesla Powerwall 2 as well that can also discharge at 5kW its not so much of an issue. Regarding the wife educating :) Been there, we have an old iPad on the wall that displays the solar info, so I tell her if there is solar fill your boots, if not only 1 thing at a time :D

    Hi Dale I hope you get the issues sorted with the battery. I was wondering if you have started to get your export MPAN and if so what was or is the time frame octopus energy gave you ? . Also I was wondering how the ev mower if I can call it that is going any issues? Cheers

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 7 днів тому

      When I made the EXPORT request with Octopus they said it may take 6 - 7 weeks, however I made my application on the 5th June and was all sorted to be paid to export by the 13th June. I am not sure if it happened faster as I was already in touch with Octopus about some billing issues, but for me it was a pretty smooth process. The ATCO electric mower is still working really well. I use it to cut the grass obviously, as well as tow things around to make my life easier, its a little work horse. Only change I have made is buy a faster charger, but this was only because I had the original one stolen, so was an opportunity to pay abit more for the faster charging capability.

      I don't believe so, just the 1.6mm it comes with.

    Great stuff. I enjoyed all your PPL videos and actually just my license. How have you found the 172? I learned in a PA28 but seems like all the club aircraft are impossible to take away for any length of time so considering a 172 share.

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 14 днів тому

      Congrats on the licence. Ref the C172 I really like it, but I have never flown anything else. Originally I wanted to fly the PA28, but not many schools had them, and also once I got going the single point of entry put me off abit. Deffo worth doing a flight in one and see what you think.

    Great video Dale. I particularly liked the flyover of M5 jnc11a which I frequently use. Also the flyover of Kemble airfield. As an apprentice with GPO telephones I can recall being driven down the runway many times in a GPO Morris van!!! The Red Arrows were based there in those days.

    Very useful video. I have two questions, firstly whilst I see you need to enable bluetooth on your phone to connect initially does the mini subsequently link to your phone via wi-fi/mobile network once setup is complete allowing bluetooth to be turned off (I don't leave bluetooth on as it flattens my phone battery really fast). Also is there any evidence to show that the Octopus mini is secure and doesn't pose any risk to network security?

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 14 днів тому

      Thanks for watching. Regarding the first point, after the initial setup you phone doesnt need to be connected at all. The second point is a good one, and to be honest I dont know. I have an IOT VLAN setup on my network, so all those things are connected there with only Internet access, so something I have slightly less concern about to be honest.

    Previous 6 port ryobi charger - RC18627 - was unrealiable crap. When it was charging it was charging but sometimes it decided it won't charge anything (batteries inserted for a few days). The fix was removing batteries and inserting these again. Does RC18640 have the same problem?

    Thanks for your videos. I've got to get all mine finished by the end of June and I have 3 to do. Flight, planning, Principles of Flight and Communications. It's going to be tight but I reckon I can still do it (otherwise I have to do all 9 again!). One question I have though - do they give you the cosine for the stalling speed at 45 degree angle of bank? Otherwise how the hell would you work that out unless you have a scientific calculator? Even working out the square root of the cosine answer would be a bit fiddly. Your info on this would help me prep my exam so thanks in advance for that. Ian

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 15 днів тому

      It was a year ago so memory is hazy, but I don't recall being given any info for the cosine, and this is partially why I think I got that question wrong, but I admit to struggling with the cosine math anyway. I can't remember if this is one you were allowed a calculator in or not, I tried to look it up but couldnt find the info easily. Sorry its not much help, but the main things I do recall was mentioned in the video, so hope this helps a little. Good luck.

    Great Video! Quick question, did you disconnect the Solar Panel from the Nemo IDDX1230 and swap them over to the new MPPT unit that you added?? (I see the top right terminal of the NEMO is unconnected which is the PV+ connection). I have a hero camper where the NEMO is being used to also charge the battery via solar (Non-MPPT however). As far as I am aware anyways.

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks 17 днів тому

      No, my camper came from the factory with the MPPT controller. I think my camper year was one of the first years they added the additional controller as some issues in the past with PV on the Nemo, however this doesn't seem consistent across countries, etc.

    in reality, in a small room, a 2kwh heater consumes 100-300W, it is not on all the time

    I have the same outdoor light just installed it, How do you use this sensor to activate the lights but then turn the lights off after say 1minute, my light is by the front door being used as a porch light to unlock the door when home from work but then I want it to switch off till motion is detected again later on Not have it stay on all nights. Is that possible?
